meet the new boss: I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. You don’t have the right…
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again.
You don’t have the right to shame people over pirating videogames, or pirating anything in that matter. I see this in the ND tags cooonstantly and I’m soo friggin tired of it. Not all of us have money to spare for games. Not all of us want to spend…
That’s not the problem. The problem is that someone very rude suggested that we are all privileged rich kids that “have mommy and daddy” buy us the games and that is just not true. Its offensive on a number of levels and it doesn’t belong in the tag. You know, the safe place for the Clue Crew to come and actually enjoy the games they play. You want to pirate, fine, I can’t stop you. But if anyone tries to be a jerk to me or anyone else, by lobbing accusations at us and trying to shame us for actually buying the game then yeah. I’m going to defend myself and I have every damn right to do so.
I also think the issue is that the person who was getting all excited after finding a torrented version of the game defended their actions by just attacking us by saying that “mommy and daddy” paid for all of our games.
We pointed out their action as something that was wrong, and they retaliated by attacking us as people. I’m not saying the person who torrents is bad or wrong or should be judged, but when you start resorting to ad hominem in an argument, things are going to get messy.
The person who torrented games seemed pretty proud of their actions and entitled to their opinion, and so are the people who believe that stealing games is wrong.
But just saying “shhh” when people are pointing out an action that is inherently unethical, doesn’t help and is just adding fuel to the fire
Good points, guys.
Also, I must say, I do have a right to shame people for doing things that are wrong — people who do wrong things may not like it because that means somebody is pointing out to them that they’re not acting properly, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a right. As a matter of fact, it’s the people that are doing wrong things, like pirating, who don’t have a right to do what they are doing. Nobody has a right to steal things.
Expanding on that, just because someone “can’t afford” to buy the games does not give anyone the right to pirate them. Generally, if you can’t afford to buy a luxury item, that means you don’t get to have it — that’s how the world works, and if you don’t like it, that’s just too bad. “I want it, but I can’t afford it, or I don’t feel like paying for it” is no excuse for stealing. If there is something that you really want that badly, you can figure out a way to get it the right way. I will never feel bad for someone who pirates or steals luxury items, no matter their excuse, because it’s wrong and it hurts every single person involved in the process of making it and getting it to you, and the more people that pirate, the more the hurt adds up.
You and others may not feel bad about pirating, but you should, and it’s a shame that you don’t and you choose to steal. I may not be able to stop anyone from pirating or make people change their ways, and I understand that while there is internet there will always be pirating, but it just sucks because it’s wrong and hurts the livelihoods of so many hardworking people.

By the way, this is the ONLY women’s library in the country, it has only women’s work in it and also serves as a sort of feminist museum. They’re affiliated with a university close by and hold regular events such as workshops and talks on subjects like the poetry of immigrant women of colour or the representation of mental health in women’s literature. Its also due to be closed down by the Conservatives.
Can men go in and borrow books written by women?
Yeah, totally, they even do events for men by women on intro to feminism, rape culture stuff sometimes!
god forbid women have a single fucking thing without men getting jealous like fucking children
Ugh
